Athens, Greece
Hotel Grande Bretagne
A Luxury Collection Hotel
What it is
Athens’ famed Grande Dame in the exact center of the city.
What it isn't
A young party-centric hot spot nor is it a trendy boutique.
What we think
Right in the center of the city, the Grande Bretagne, the GB for short, is one of Athens classic landmarks. Built in 1874, it’s not quite one of the founding buildings of the ancient city, but it’s definitely a landmark. Oozing Old World grandeur, the building is a massive and royal testament to Renaissance Revival architecture. At eight stories, it’s a giant in the low city. Inside, the 320 rooms and suites are a combination of classic detailing and modern refinement. The rooms are detailed with intricate molding, restored antiques from Christie's and Sotheby's and views that are unparalleled by anything else in the city. Depending on which direction the room faces, guests look out to the Acropolis and the Parthenon, the Parliament, funiculars soaring to the top of Lycabettus Hill, or the original Olympic Stadium. Downstairs, through the vast, mosaic tiled lobby, across what seems like acres of Persian rugs, Alexander’s Bar can be found. While you sip your cognac, you can gaze up at the 18th century tapestry which features Alexander the Great entering Gaugamela. Up on the rooftop, GB Roof Garden serves all meals with unobstructed views of Athens’ famed sites. In the heart of the hotel, the Winter Garden also serves every meal of the day, but in lieu of views of ancient sites, live music and potted palms surround guests.
You're here because
You want a hotel where everything is steeped in Old European elegance. Plus...those views.
The Moment
Up on the rooftop, you sip on a Tears of Chios. The bartender, in playful banter convinced you to try something new. You took the bait and now, as you sip on the shaken vodka, mastika, lime, grape and mint cocktail, you’re more than glad you took his dare. Turning away from the bar, the acropolis stands proudly, a majestic temple atop the craggy cliff face.

Location
Overlooking Syntagma Square, the GB is right next to the Parliament House, between the neighborhoods of Kolonaki and Plaka. The narrow, winding streets of the little neighborhoods hold some of the city’s best shopping and dozens of tiny cafes.
The ancient Agora, the Parthenon, and the Acropolis are all within easy walking distance. About a half mile away, there’s a funicular that runs to the top of Lycabettus Hill where all of Athens can be seen.
The international airport is 30-40 minutes away, depending on traffic.
