Sorrento, Italy
Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria
Historic High-Life
What it is
A storied retreat since 1834, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, spa in a 19th century greenhouse, al fresco pool and prime waterfront perch over the Bay of Naples.
What it isn't
Corporate. The hotel has been run by the Fiorentino family since the beginning (it’s now the fifth generation).
What we think
Both Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren have stayed here—so it tracks that the hotel is a bombshell, too. She may be nearly 200 years old, but she’s fresh as a Hollywood starlet, thanks to timelessly elegant rooms. Even the “starter” 270 to 376-square-foot Double Garden View rooms are an Only-In-Italy delight, with their ornate window dressings and sumptuous furnishings (gleaming antique wood furniture; twinkling chandeliers). We love the Deluxe Junior Suite Sea View, which has a jaw-dropping panorama over turquoise waters below from its private terrace; they top out at 645 square feet, each with their own living rooms tailor-made for aperitivo hour. While you’re here, be sure to book one of their curated experiences, from driving the Amalfi coastline in a Ferrari to private guided tours of the archeological thrills of Pompeii.
You're here because
You will travel for an unforgettable meal, and there may be nothing better than Terrazza Bosquet, where dishes include gragnano linguine with red shrimp, seaweed and lemon-scented olive oil.
The Moment
It’s the type of perfect seaside day that will live in your memory forever—so there’s no way you’re eating lunch indoors. You head to the terrace of waterside Terrazza Vittoria and order paccheri pasta with lobster, yellow cherry tomatoes and sea asparagus, which is exactly as divine as it sounds.
