Riviera Maya, Mexico
Maroma, A Belmond Hotel
Elegance With a Mayan Touch
What it is
Mayan-tinged elegance on a stunning beach.
What it isn't
A sprawling pre-fab complex.
What we think
Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa was one of the first luxury resorts to appear on the Riviera Maya, and—despite expanding several times and being brought under the Belmond umbrella—it remains one of the best retreats. Formerly a coconut plantation, the hotel has a distinctly Mayan feel, thanks to indigenous art, handcrafted furniture and white stucco buildings fringed with thatch roofs. The 63 rooms and suites have private terraces, hand-painted tiles in the bathrooms, smooth stone floors, exposed beams and huge white beds. There's an unmistakably romantic vibe—especially when the sun goes down and thousands of candles light the walkways and public spaces. Families are welcome, too (there are even Welcome amenities for kids along with special menus in the restaurant and spa), although at certain times of year there is an extra charge for young children staying in their parents' room. The best features: a soft white-sand beach, one of the best on the coast, and a temple-like 7,000-square-foot spa that focuses on traditional Mayan treatments.
You're here because
You want to be swept away by luxury and romance, but don't want to lose a sense of authenticity.
The Moment
A brightly colored butterfly lands on your shoulder as you wander through the hotel’s lush tropical jungle surroundings.
