Coronado, California
Hotel del Coronado
Curio Collection by Hilton
What it is
A family friendly 1888 Victorian resort with 757 rooms, just across the bay from downtown San Diego.
What it isn't
Intimate, though the newer Beach Village addition (78 rooms in 11 oceanfront villas) to the Hotel del Coronado can feel like its own property.
What we think
Hotel del Coronado, or The Del, as it’s lovingly known among its regulars, has a history as all-American as apple pie. A handful of U.S. presidents have stayed at this 1888 Victorian, including Roosevelt, Taft, Clinton and both George H. and George W. What else might you discover on a history tour of the property? Some Like It Hot was filmed at the Hotel del Coronado in 1958, and there are rumors of friendly ghosts that roam the halls. Of the 757 rooms, 144 are suites, which range from family-friendly—think bright and whimsical wallpaper—to simple and elegant abodes with kitchens and entertaining-minded dining rooms. And unlike other resorts in California, the Hotel del Coronado has a semi private beach, peppered with chairs, luxury cabanas, and smaller cabanettes, so sun-soakers can order margaritas and smoked turkey sandwiches from polo-clad waiters. Guests of the Hotel del Coronado can also sign up for surf lessons, dine on seafood and veggies (grown in the resort’s garden), and at the day’s end, sip fresh-muddled blackberry margaritas at the Sunset Bar.
