Washington, Connecticut
Mayflower Inn & Spa
Auberge Resorts Collection
What it is
An idyllic 30-room hideaway from city life on 58 verdant acres, with a serene 20,000-square-foot spa.
What it isn't
Uninspired. Among the more than 25 fitness classes offered to guests? Fencing, HIIT, Forest Bathing, and Ai Chi, a form of aquatic therapy.
What we think
Maxed-out New Yorkers obsess over this resplendent hideaway, a salve for stress just a couple hours drive north of Manhattan in tranquil Litchfield County. Most of the traditionally outfitted guest rooms are stocked with four post beds, fireplaces, soaking tubs and other thoughtful touches (expect a pillow menu with no less than five options). Request a suite in Speedwell Cottage for a private balcony flanked by pine and oak trees and a bathroom sumptuously lined in marble and mahogany. Of course, you’re not likely to spend much time in your room; in addition to an over-the-top spa, activities like cheesemaking courses and private guided hikes around Lake Waramaug await.
You're here because
Among other things, you booked the Mayflower for the food, which is as locavore as they come (New England-y dishes include herb-poached lobster with wild arugula).
The Moment
Basking in a sun beam within one of the spa’s fluffy white armchairs, you soak in the solace as you await your warm river stone massage. You consider coming back for “sound healing” with Nepalese and Tibetan sound bowls, which can reportedly prompt a period of self-healing within, but honestly sounds like a treat, if for nothing else than escaping the dings and buzzes of modern life.

Location
In Washington, Connecticut, a town of 3,578 and reportedly the inspiration for Gilmore Girls’ Stars Hollow. It’s every bit as charming, with centuries-old storefronts surrounded by rolling hills.
