Tierra Patagonia

Where to stay at the End of the Earth

What it is

A resort that pairs perfectly with the otherworldly beauty of Patagonia.

What it isn't

Neither a blinged-out, new-agey resort nor a crunchy granola eco-lodge.

What we think

Designed to evoke the fossil of an ancient beast that would have roamed Patagonia’s vast plains, Tierra Patagonia’s long and low shape blends into the rugged earth around it. The architecture is sweeping and modern, but as it’s constructed from local wood and stone, it doesn’t feel out of place. Countless nooks are filled with hanging basket chairs and fireplace-lit seating areas that face floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The beautifully desolate wilderness and snow-capped peaks of Torres del Paine National Park lie just outside. The staff—wonderful—can arrange hikes of any level, horseback rides led by gauchos and excursions to farther reaches of the park. Back at the hotel, the 40 rooms and suites are quiet and and comfortable, with a somewhat Scandinavian vibe thanks to the blonde lenga wood, white fabrics and sheepskins. Three meals per day (the food is excellent), an open bar, the Uma spa’s sauna and steam room, as well as the transfer from Punta Arenas, are all included in the room rate.

You're here because

You want to experience Patagonia’s wild beauty with the direction and assistance of expert guides… and then return to the resort’s spa and quiet comfort.

The Moment

The snow-capped peaks lie in the distance across the rugged steppe. Hiking along the trail, your eyes lock on a surreally blue lake filled from glacial runoff. The guide points up at an Andean condor, his 10-foot wingspan creating a shadow the size of a small plane.

Restaurants & Bars

The food here is amazing making use of the best local ingredients. Seafood comes from the Straits of Magellan and Beagle Canal. Meats and lamb come from nearby ranches. The food is hearty and delicious with a distinctly Patagonian style. Tierra also has a range of creative vegetarian options. Although you can opt for a private table, try a dinner at the iconic long Red Table as well.

The bar has an extensive list of Chilean wines, cocktails, and artisan beers.

Location

The resort is a four-hour, arrestingly beautiful drive up Ruta 9 from the closest international airport, in Punta Arenas.
