What we think

You don’t name your ski lodge after a Norwegian Olympic Gold Medalist unless you aim to win. And Stein Eriksen takes gold in every single arena—so much so that it’s often deemed the ultimate ski getaway in America. Guest rooms feature requisite lodge mainstays (open beam ceilings and faux fur throws, plus stone fireplaces and private alfresco hot tubs in select suites), but you’ll likely spend most of your time living it up on the adjacent snow-dusted slopes. Don’t miss the Utah lamb with rye berries and figs or the Rocky Mountain elk tenderloin at Glitretind Restaurant, or the 10,000-bottle wine cellar, where guests can arrange blind tastings of the million-dollar collection. The kids’ program, with in-room teepees and National Geographic Starry Night lanterns, will keep the wee ones occupied for hours.

It’s a classic choice that still feels brand-new. If you want a scene, consider the Montage. The St. Regis is newer and a touch more refined, but the location isn’t as ideal.
