And Stein Eriksen takes gold in every single arena—so much so that it’s often deemed the ultimate ski getaway in America. Guest rooms feature requisite lodge mainstays (open beam ceilings and faux fur throws, plus stone fireplaces and private alfresco hot tubs in select suites), but you’ll likely spend most of your time living it up on the adjacent snow-dusted slopes. Don’t miss the Utah lamb with rye berries and figs or the Rocky Mountain elk tenderloin at Glitretind Restaurant, or the 10,000-bottle wine cellar, where guests can arrange blind tastings of the million-dollar collection. The kids’ program, with in-room teepees and National Geographic Starry Night lanterns, will keep the wee ones occupied for hours.

Dated, despite its Nordic chalet look and venerable reputation. Recent enhancements include new pools, entertainment centers and a theater.

It’s a classic choice that still feels brand-new. If you want a scene, consider the Montage. The St. Regis is newer and a touch more refined, but the location isn’t as ideal.

After a morning slaloming, and an afternoon ferried around snowcapped grounds by horse-drawn sleigh, you’ve got one thing on the agenda: a hot stone massage that makes you feel as warm as the fireside hot toddy you’re treating yourself to after.
