ROKU KYOTO

LXR Hotels & Resorts

What it is

A serene alpine retreat on the Tenjin River, with modernist guest rooms, a French-meets-Japanese restaurant and bar, al fresco onsen-fed infinity pool and locally inspired spa.

What it isn't

Missing anything. Guests will find a well stocked gym, gratis parking, turndown service, kindly concierges, and digital keys if they’d like to check in at their leisure.

What we think

Kyoto is known the world over for its Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples—to the point that it has multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites within its boundaries. It’s tough to wow visitors in such an eye-popping locale, but Roku Kyoto instantly turns heads—thanks to floor to ceiling glass walls and streamlined architecture that echoes traditional local aesthetics. We love that each room option is ginormous (starting at a whopping 538 square feet) and artfully adorned, with blonde wood built in shelving lit by hidden LEDs, karakami washi (woodblock-printed) walls, and an assemblage of local art pieces. Treat yourself to a Peak Suite King with a sprawling 1,076-square-foot floor plan and panorama over the adjacent forest-shrouded Takagamine mountains, where artists flocked in the 16th century.

You're here because

Resort staff have put together custom experiences you’ll never forget, ranging from making washi paper with a Kyoto artist to tea ceremony in a revamped sake cask.

The Moment

You’ve indulged in afternoon tea all across the globe, but something about the offering here is particularly transcendent. Is it the warabi mochi? The cherry blossom cheesecake? Or the sunlight streaming in the wall of glass as you sip your roasted green tea? Probably all of the above.
