Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam

What We Think

If you’ve ever wanted to spend a night at the museum, now’s your chance. The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam feels worthy of an entrance fee, thanks to its cinematic staircase by Daniel Marot (an architect for Louis XIV) and walls lined with 18th century artworks. But if you think it’s too historic to be cozy, don’t. Each of the 93 guest rooms would satisfy Martha Stewart herself, thanks to plush leather and velvet upholstery in soothing neutrals and uber-luxe amenities you might not expect, such as Ferragamo bathroom amenities and an en-suite espresso machine. Ask for one with exposed ceiling beams and a canal view to get an only in Amsterdam vibe.

What It Is

A perfectly melded sextet of 17th century palaces settled on the Herengracht canal, with a Guerlain spa and indoor pool.

What It Isn't

Cold. Yes, this hotel is more steeped in history than many others you’ll find, but it’s also home to doting staff (see the 24-hour reception desk and the fact that each and every guest has their own concierge on call).

You're Here Because

Staffers can get you insider access to coveted opera tickets and behind-the-scenes museum tours.

The Moment

Among the hotel’s four bars and restaurants, you’ve come to love the Vault most. Is it the locals mingling before former Mees & Hope bank’s safety deposit boxes—now stocked with bottles? The speakeasy feel in the circa 1665 sandstone building? Or the fact that your cocktail, the Hop Toad—with Jamaican Rum, apricot brandy, and lime—makes you feel 19 again in a good way? You order another round. It’s starting to feel like home.
